Why Defending Your Faith Matters
A young couple with 2 kids started attending our church. It was clear God was working in their life, and they were actively seeking him, but weren't right with him.
After a few months of attending, the husband said, "I need to talk. Can we get together? I think I might be ready to be a Christian, but I've got some questions."
Music to a pastor's ears, right? But the truth is, I've still got to answer the questions... and that can be scary. But I made the appointment, and showed up.
But when we sat down to talk, it surprised me. It wasn't mostly about theology, or salvation. He was 90% there on all that. Instead, he had a completely different category of questions. He asked questions about:
Dinosaurs
Creation & the Flood
The problem of evil and pain in the world
How we could trust the Bible
And more like that
I did my best. I was grateful that I was prepared with answers. I had done my research, I had done my reading and my thinking... I had prepared to defend my faith, and God helped me be able to do it. After about an hour, he nodded his head and said, "OK, that's it. I'm ready."
I blinked. "You're ready to pray?"
He nodded.
We bowed our heads, we prayed, and Jesus saved him.
That day, I realized more fully than I had before, this truth: that in our skeptical age, there are sincere people who still need to reconcile the pull of their heart with the life of their mind. And when that happened for him, he was ready!
Today is no different. In fact, it may be even more that way. The question today is, how can I be ready:
to answer objections
to show the Bible's reliability
to reconcile a broken world with a loving God
Why "Normal" Christians Defending Your Faith Matters
People expect pastors, theologians, and apologists to defend Christianity. But when an everyday believer—a mechanic, a teacher, a stay-at-home mom, a college student—confidently and thoughtfully explains why they believe in Christ, it carries an even greater impact. Why? Because it proves that Christianity isn’t just for "religious professionals"—it’s for real people living in the real world.
Skeptics often assume that faith is blind, that it's something only accepted without reason. But when they encounter a regular person who can calmly and confidently explain why they believe the Bible, why they trust Jesus, and why Christianity makes sense, it forces them to take the faith more seriously.
Think of it like this: If a world-class chef tells you a certain restaurant is amazing, you might assume they have a professional bias. But if your neighbor—who has no special culinary training—raves about the same restaurant and explains why it’s so good, you’re more likely to check it out yourself.
In the same way, when everyday Christians can answer common objections, explain why the Bible is trustworthy, and share the evidence for Jesus' resurrection, it makes an enormous difference. It shows that faith isn't just for church leaders—it’s something that changes the lives of real people in every walk of life.
That’s why equipping yourself to defend your faith isn’t just for pastors—it’s for every believer who interacts with family, friends, and coworkers who have doubts or questions. You don’t need a theology degree to be confident in your faith—you just need the right tools.
