I've got an encouraging story for you today.
A young couple with 2 kids started attending our church. It was clear God was working in their life, and they were actively seeking him, but weren't right with him.
After a few months of attending, the husband said, "I need to talk. Can we get together? I think I might be ready to be a Christian, but I've got some questions."
Music to a pastor's ears, right? But the truth is, I've still got to answer the questions... and that can be a bit (OK, a lot) scary. But I made the appointment, and showed up.
But when we sat down to talk, it surprised me. It wasn't mostly about theology, or salvation. He was 90% there on all that. Instead, he had a completely different category of questions. He asked questions about:
Dinosaurs
Creation & the Flood
The problem of evil and pain in the world
How we could trust the Bible
And more like that
I did my best. I was grateful that I was prepared with answers. I had done my research, I had done my reading and my thinking. After about an hour, he nodded his head and said, "OK, that's it. I'm ready."
I blinked. "You're ready to pray?"
He nodded.
We bowed our heads, we prayed, and Jesus saved him.
That day, I realized more fully than I had before, this truth: that in our skeptical age, there are sincere people who still need to reconcile the pull of their heart with the life of their mind. And when that happened for him, he was ready!
Today is no different. In fact, it may be even more that way. The question today is, how can I be ready:
to answer objections
to show the Bible's reliability
to reconcile a broken world with a loving God
